The Fog

• Carpenter first got the idea for the film's premise on a UK trip promoting Assault on Precinct 13, when he and co-writer/producer Debra Hill visited Stonehenge and watched an eerie fog sit on the horizon; Carpenter later said he wanted to make an old-fashioned ghost story after Halloween's success.
• The film's budget grew from roughly $900,000 to $1.1 million during production. It was shot in spring 1979 on location around Point Reyes Station, Inverness, Bolinas, and Sierra Madre, California, plus interiors at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood.
• After a lukewarm test screening left Carpenter and Hill unsatisfied with how scary the finished cut played, they reshot roughly a third of the film to punch up the scares and gore — including the added morgue sequence where the supposedly dead body gets up, grabs a scalpel, and stalks Elizabeth.
• Rob Bottin, only 20 years old at the time, handled the special makeup effects and also took a small on-screen role himself as the decayed Captain Blake.
• Jamie Lee Curtis was cast for her draw as a post-Halloween scream queen; Carpenter and Hill reportedly wrote her role into the film partly out of loyalty, since Halloween's success hadn't translated into much other acting work for her yet.

The fog operates as a literal manifestation of suppressed history—Antonio Bay's centennial is a celebration built on erasure, and the ghosts aren't seeking random violence but specifically targeting descendants and institutions tied to the original theft. The church that Father Malone inherits becomes ground zero because organized religion sanctioned the crime.

Stevie Wayne is positioned as a modern oracle trapped in her lighthouse, broadcasting into the void like a siren. The film's radio motif ties her to Cassandra's curse: she sees the truth first, screams it into the dark, and only a handful listen in time. The fog punishes those who won't hear her.

Blake and his crew aren't simply vengeful spirits but enforcers of a cosmic contract. They return exactly on the centennial because the debt was timed, not emotional. They take six lives to match the six founders who conspired against them—a ledger balancing, not a haunting, which is why the fog eventually recedes without total annihilation.
