The Funhouse

• Screenwriter Lawrence J. Block (billed as Larry Block) wrote the spec script on his own; Universal picked it up in a negative-pickup deal after the success of Friday the 13th (1980) had studios chasing teen-slasher material.
• The monster makeup for Gunther Twibunt was designed by Rick Baker and executed by Craig Reardon — the two collaborated again shortly after on An American Werewolf in London.
• Kevin Conway plays three separate barker roles in the film (freak show, strip show, and funhouse barker), each with a distinct look and voice — but he does not voice the masked killer. Gunther has no lines and is played entirely through physical performance by Wayne Doba.
• The funhouse interior was built on a soundstage in Miami, Florida, not at Universal Studios. Production wanted to shoot at Universal but couldn't get a California waiver letting child actor Shawn Carson work overnight, so filming moved to Ivan Tors/Norin Studios in Florida instead.
• The film got swept into the UK's 'video nasty' panic and was prosecuted (unsuccessfully) under the Video Recordings Act, despite the BBFC having already passed it uncut for cinemas with an X certificate. Some critics believe it was a mistaken-identity mix-up with Last House on Dead End Street, which had also circulated under the title The Fun House.
• Tobe Hooper took the job partly because he was a longtime fan of the carnival-set film noir Nightmare Alley (1947) and had wanted to direct his own carnival horror story.

The carnival functions as a mirror for adolescent sexual anxiety. Every attraction the teens encounter commodifies or grotesques adult sexuality, from the peep show booths to the fortune teller's boudoir. The killer's murder of the fortune teller during their own paid encounter reads as psychosexual rage, not accident. The funhouse itself is the film's thesis: teenage desire to peek behind the curtain of adulthood gets punished with a look at what actually happens back there.

Gunther's mask is the key to the whole film. He wears a Frankenstein monster mask to hide his face, but the reveal of his real deformity suggests the mask was never disguise, it was aspiration. He wants to be the monster from the movies, not the one his genetics made. When the mask comes off, the film argues that cinematic horror gives shape to something that already exists in the blood, not the other way around.

The killer's family knows exactly what their son is and has built the entire carnival operation as a containment strategy. The funhouse isn't just a job, it's a cage. The barker's calm cleanup after the murder, his practiced line about 'accidents,' implies this has happened before. The traveling aspect of the carnival isn't just commerce. It's flight.

Four teens decide a night locked inside a traveling carnival's dark ride is the ultimate double-date thrill. They stash themselves in the funhouse after hours, watching from the catwalks as the barker's masked son pays the carnival fortune teller for her services. When she won't hand back his money, he beats her to death in a rage. The barker finds the body — and now the kids who saw it become loose ends. Stripped of its carnival bark and cheap scares, Hooper's film trades teen-slasher formula for something nastier: the family that runs the horror show IS the horror show. The monsters aren't hiding. They're charging admission.
