The "ghost" of Dr. Hichcock can be read as guilt made physical: every uncanny event that drives Margaret and Livingstone toward madness could just as easily be the housekeeper's engineered revenge — meaning the haunting might not be supernatural at all, just paranoia doing a dead man's work for him.

The vanished inheritance is the real ghost story: the money the couple killed for never appears, and Freda seems less interested in punishing them with a spirit than with their own greed eating the plot from the inside.

The final line — a priest telling Hichcock's portrait "I told you the devil is a very real person" — leaves the haunting deliberately unresolved. Whether it's Hichcock's spirit, a staged revenge, or Margaret's own unraveling conscience, the film refuses to pick a lane, and treats that ambiguity as the actual punishment.

Riccardo Freda's gothic chamber piece traps a scheming wife, her lover, and a paralyzed doctor in a rotting Scottish estate where revenge refuses to stay buried. Dr. John Hichcock is wheelchair-bound and running his own experimental cure on himself — lethal poison shots chased with an antidote, administered by his live-in colleague Dr. Livingstone. Hichcock's wife Margaret is done playing nurse to a husband she despises, so she talks Livingstone into skipping the antidote on the next round and calling it medicine gone wrong. The murder works. What doesn't work is getting away with it: the inheritance they killed for never turns up, the housekeeper won't stop watching them, and something that looks a lot like Hichcock starts walking the halls anyway. Freda stages it as Les Diaboliques rebuilt in gothic drag, where the getting-away-with-it is just the opening act of the punishment.
