PLOT
- The story began as an unsolicited outline from a Canadian fan, J. Llewellyn Divine, which director John Gilling and producer Anthony Nelson Keys developed into the shooting script.
- Barbara Shelley was originally slated to play both her character Carla and the monstrous Gorgon Megaera, but the reveal role was reassigned to former ballerina Prudence Hyman instead, reportedly to keep the mystery intact — Shelley later said she'd even offered to wear real snakes in the wig and was turned down.
- Christopher Lee plays Professor Karl Meister, the rational, monster-hunting scholar who helps crack the case — a rarer heroic turn for him at Hammer, playing opposite Peter Cushing's morally compromised Dr. Namaroff.
- Contemporary reviews, including Variety, dinged the film's pacing as "leisurely," and it's remained one of the more talky, slow-burn entries in Hammer's Gothic run despite the Lee-Cushing pedigree.
- When Ray Harryhausen built his own Medusa for Clash of the Titans (1981), he was reportedly unimpressed by Hammer's Gorgon and went a different direction, giving his creature a serpent's tail instead of legs — the first time Medusa had been shown that way on screen.
