The Hands of Orlac

• Based on the 1920 novel Les Mains d'Orlac by French author Maurice Renard.
• Despite its German-Expressionist look, the film was an Austrian production — made by the Pan-Film company and shot at the Listo Film studios in Vienna, not Berlin.
• In early 1925, Saxony's Ministry of the Interior tried to get the film banned in Germany, arguing that its depiction of police fingerprint-identification methods was realistic enough to endanger public safety; the request was reviewed and denied.
• The film survived for decades only in incomplete, re-edited prints; it wasn't restored to its full original length until 1995, when the Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv, the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung and the Deutsches Filminstitut reconstructed it from multiple surviving negatives.
• The story was remade in Hollywood as Mad Love (1935), directed by Karl Freund, with Peter Lorre (in his American film debut) as the obsessed surgeon Dr. Gogol and Colin Clive as Orlac.

The film can be read as pure psychological breakdown: Orlac's hands are perfectly normal, and every act of violence he commits is his own psyche cracking under guilt and trauma. The murderer's note, the threatening figures in his home—all projections of a mind that has already decided it is capable of killing. The 'evil hands' are his alibi.

Orlac's wife is the film's true protagonist and its most unreliable witness. Her desperation to save her husband drives her to embrace the transplant, and her subsequent fear may be self-serving projection. If the hands are monstrous, she bears equal culpability for inviting that monstrosity into their home. Her terror becomes a shield against her own responsibility.

The executed murderer never actually had his hands removed. The surgeon, obsessed with defying natural law, harvested from another source entirely and fabricated the killer-hands story to study whether Orlac would conform to the narrative. The experiment is not about the hands—it is about whether identity can be imposed through suggestion.
