• The alien parasite was a practical creature effect built by makeup artist Kevin Yagher and his team (which included future genre names Howard Berger and Robert Kurtzman). Yagher went on to design the Freddy Krueger makeup for A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.
• New Line Cinema made the film on an estimated $5 million budget; it grossed roughly $9.7 million worldwide, a modest theatrical hit for the studio.
• Casting came down to the wire — Kyle MacLachlan wasn't locked in as Agent Gallagher until just days before shooting began. He and co-star Michael Nouri reportedly each agreed to do the film on the condition the other signed on too. Director Jack Sholder later called MacLachlan 'an inspired choice.'

Gallagher's stiff, awkward behavior around human customs isn't bad acting or fish-out-of-water comedy — it's the film quietly showing that the FBI agent is himself wearing a stolen body the same way the villain does. He's just better at it because he's had more practice, and the film later confirms he's an alien law-enforcement officer named Alhague.

The alien's obsession with Ferraris, loud music, and junk food reads as a satire of American excess, but the film's real target is the cop genre itself: the parasite is essentially the ultimate action-movie protagonist, a creature that consumes everything in its path and moves on without consequence.

The final scene, where Beck's wife and daughter wait at his hospital bed as Alhague's essence slips into Beck's dying body, reframes the whole film as a story about assimilation — the villain's violent version, and Alhague's quieter, more selfless one, sacrificing his own identity so a stranger's family won't lose their father the way he lost his own wife and child to the creature he was hunting.
