• The Horseman was made on a shoestring outside Australia's traditional government-funding system — trade press at the time dubbed it a 'family-funded' production, with writer-director Steven Kastrissios and producer Rebecca Dakin financing it independently through their own company, Kastle Films.
• Peter Marshall, who plays Christian Forteski, came up as a stage actor, not a screen one — he was discovered by Geoffrey Rush, who directed him in a production of The Merry Wives of Windsor, and he'd headlined for several of Queensland's top theatre companies before this role.
• The film won Best Film (tied with Acolytes) and Best Director at the 2008 Melbourne Underground Film Festival for Kastrissios.

Christian's rampage is a suicide attempt he can't execute directly. He repeatedly puts himself in situations where any of his targets could kill him — the meth head with a weapon, the producer's crew — but his rage keeps him alive. The final confrontation isn't justice; it's the last failed attempt to die.

The tape arriving anonymously in the mail is no coincidence. One of the men who exploited Jesse sent it deliberately, either out of guilt or cruelty, making the entire revenge arc a manipulation from the start. Christian never investigates who mailed the package, which reads as the film's sharpest indictment of a grief so self-absorbed it never questions its own ignition.

Christian is the film's real villain. Every target he brutalizes had the same distance from Jesse that he did — they used her, he abandoned her, and the film stages his violence as a grotesque performance of paternal care that only underscores his absence. The Horseman isn't a revenge story; it's a custody hearing conducted with a tire iron.

Christian Forteski is already keeping the urn holding his share of his estranged daughter Jesse's ashes when a videotape shows up in the mail with no return address — a cheaply shot porno with Jesse's face on the cover, filmed in the drugged-out days before she died. What follows isn't revenge — it's a guided tour through a grief so corrosive it eats the man carrying it. Kastrissios drags Christian through Queensland's amateur smut underbelly, brutalizing everyone connected to Jesse's spiral, but the violence is never the point. The point is a father arriving too late to a crime scene that started long before anyone pressed record. By the time Christian tracks down the last man who saw Jesse alive, the hunter has become the hunted — the film indicting him for every year he wasn't there by making him, too, a casualty of his own war.
