PLOT
- The film is adapted from Bruno Schulz's short story collection 'Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass,' and Schulz himself was shot dead by a Gestapo officer on the streets of his hometown in 1942, making the film a posthumous resurrection of his fragmented, dreamlike prose.
- The production was shot at the Wytwórnia Filmów Fabularnych studio in Łódź, Poland's historic feature-film studio complex.
- The film won the Jury Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, sharing the honor with Claude Goretta's 'The Invitation' — but only after Polish authorities forbade director Wojciech Has from submitting it, forcing him to smuggle a print out of the country so it could screen at all. The jury, led by Ingrid Bergman, honored it anyway.
- Despite the Cannes prize, the film was suppressed at home afterward and stayed nearly impossible to see in the West for decades, kept alive mostly by scattered prints and festival screenings.
- Martin Scorsese personally championed the film's restoration, including it among the 21 digitally restored classics in his 'Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema' collection, and presented a new restoration at Cannes Classics in 2020.
