The House of the Devil

• Made for roughly $900,000, with Ti West and cinematographer Eliot Rockett shooting the whole film on 16mm to capture the grain and mood of early-1980s horror.
• Larry Fessenden produced the film through Glass Eye Pix, the New York indie-horror company he's run since 1985 and used to help launch several of Ti West's early films.
• Dark Sky Films, the horror label under MPI Media Group (the same umbrella as theatrical distributor Magnet Releasing), sent VHS tapes to roughly 50 horror journalists as a retro promo stunt for the film's 2010 DVD/Blu-ray release.
• The Ulman house is a real private Victorian home on Lime Rock Road in Lakeville, Connecticut, dressed by the art department with period furniture and wallpaper to sell the early-'80s setting.
• Tom Noonan, cast as Mr. Ulman, had already played one of the genre's most unsettling villains: Francis Dolarhyde, the 'Tooth Fairy' serial killer, in Michael Mann's Manhunter (1986).

The opening bathroom scene, where Samantha is shown crying for reasons the film never explains, has fueled a theory that she's already pregnant before she ever sets foot in the Ulman house—meaning the cult doesn't create her condition, it claims something already there. Whether or not that reading holds, her desperation for money plays as a fight for control over her own body, one the film strips away piece by piece until the final shot of her in a hospital bed, carrying something inhuman.

The lanky, menacing figure Samantha keeps spotting throughout the film—later revealed as the Ulmans' son Victor—may be a genuine threat stalking her or a projection of her mounting paranoia. The film never clarifies whether he's actually following her or whether isolation in the house is just amplifying every fear she walked in with. Either way, he's the one character whose menace never gets explained.

Mr. Ulman's candor is the trap. He tells Samantha the truth in pieces—no kid, an ailing mother, a night that has to line up with the eclipse—counting on her financial desperation to override her instincts. The film plays like it's arguing that desperation and cults work the same way: find someone who can't afford to walk away, then name your price.

Desperate cash leads college kid Samantha Hughes to a remote Victorian house for a babysitting gig that pays absurdly well. The owner, Mr. Ulman, comes clean almost immediately—no actual kid involved, just an "ailing mother" to sit with while he and his wife are out during a lunar eclipse. Samantha stays because rent is due and she's fresh out of options. What follows is a slow-burn nightmare of peanut-butter sandwiches, Walkman playlists, and a locked floor upstairs she should never go near. By the time that floor reveals its purpose, escape is no longer the problem. The problem is what's already inside her.
