TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • Mark Rosman wrote the script in 1980 under the title "Seven Sisters," partly inspired by Henri-Georges Clouzot's Les Diaboliques (1955) -- including the idea of dumping a body in a swimming pool.
  • Shot in summer 1981 on a budget of roughly $425,000, using the foreclosed Eltonhead Mansion in Pikesville, Maryland as the sorority house, with campus establishing shots filmed at the University of Maryland, College Park.
  • It was a non-union shoot; several actresses have said they were paid a flat $50-a-day rate. Eileen Davidson, the only cast member with prior professional acting credits, went on to a long soap-opera career on The Young and the Restless.
  • Despite the shoestring budget, the film grossed more than $10 million domestically -- a sleeper hit that built a lasting cult following on home video through the following decades.
  • Distributor Film Ventures rejected Mark Rosman's original, bleaker ending, which had final girl Katey turn up dead in the pool as the killer's last victim; the released cut instead has her survive, with the killer's eyes snapping open in the final shot.
