The House That Jack Built

• The film premiered out of competition at Cannes in May 2018, where more than 100 audience members walked out — a mass exodus that hit hardest after Jack shoots two children with a hunting rifle — but Lars von Trier still received a 10-minute standing ovation from those who stayed.

Jack's house does get literally built — at the climax he drags his frozen victims out of the freezer and stacks them into a house-shaped structure — but the film argues that corpse-pile was never the real project. The real house is the one Jack's been assembling out of murders for twelve years; the physical structure is just the moment the metaphor turns solid. Every kill was a 'correction' to the last one, the way an artist revises a draft — and the film you're watching is the finished blueprint, assembled from atrocity and presented as portfolio pieces for Verge's inspection.

Verge isn't just Virgil — he's the part of Jack that already understands the verdict. He talks throughout, needling Jack with lines like 'why are they so stupid,' but he never once intervenes to stop a murder. That passivity isn't patience; it's someone who already knows how the story ends. He's not guiding Jack through Hell so much as walking him toward a door Jack was always going to open himself.

The film's structure — five incidents, twelve years, a descent through circles — maps Jack onto Dante's Inferno, but von Trier reverses the theology. Dante's Hell punishes sin; Jack's Hell rewards self-awareness with deeper punishment. At the end, Jack ignores Verge's warning and tries to scale the rock face beside the broken bridge to reach the stairway out instead of taking the path offered to him — and falls. It's not that salvation was denied to him; it's that he never understood salvation required something he'd spent his entire life destroying: empathy.

Jack thinks of himself as an architect. He's wrong — he's a serial killer with OCD and a camera. Over twelve years and five "incidents" in Reagan-era Washington state, Jack narrates his crimes to a mysterious traveling companion named Verge, who talks back and pushes him to explain himself the whole way. He bludgeons a stranded motorist to death with the broken car jack they'd been using to fix her tire, chokes an elderly widow while obsessing over the bloodstains he leaves behind, and takes his girlfriend and her two young sons on a "hunting trip" that ends with all three of them dead. Every kill gets photographed and filed away like art. At the climax, Jack finally drags his frozen victims out of the meat locker and stacks them into the shape of the house he always meant to build — and Verge reveals himself as Virgil, leading Jack down through Hell. When Jack ignores the way out and tries to scale a rock face toward the stairway to salvation instead, he falls into the deepest pit of all.
