The House with the Yellow Carpet

• The film is adapted from Aldo Selleri's 1978 radio play "Teatro a domicilio," scripted for the screen by Filiberto Bandini and Lucio Battistrada — not an original story.
• Nearly the entire film plays out inside one Rome apartment with just four characters cycling through it, a chamber-piece structure carried over straight from its stage/radio-play roots.
• Director Carlo Lizzani helped kick off the poliziotteschi genre with 1968's Banditi a Milano and spent his career mixing crime cinema with hard political engagement (he was a WWII Resistance veteran and Italian Communist Party member) — this claustrophobic giallo was a personal detour from that reputation.
• It was Lizzani's first film after finishing a four-year run as director of the Venice Film Festival, and it went on to make the official selection at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival.
• Lead actress Béatrice Romand, who plays Franca, was a longtime muse of French New Wave director Eric Rohmer (Claire's Knee, A Good Marriage) — unusual casting for an Italian giallo chamber piece.

The buyer's story is so transparently thin that the real question becomes whether Franca's account of her own circumstances — the dreams, the stepfather, the marriage — is any more reliable. The film may be a two-hander where neither party deserves full trust.

The yellow carpet functions as a domestic crime scene that predates the buyer's arrival. His "purchase inquiry" is a cover story for something already set in motion before Antonio stepped out, making Franca both target and unknowing accomplice.

Lizzani's political-filmmaking background bleeds into the structure: the apartment is a miniature state, the stranger is an authority figure demanding entry, and Franca's compliance or resistance maps onto Italian anxieties about state power invading private life during the Years of Lead.

Then the buyer shows up: a soft-spoken "professor" answering the classified ad, who won't leave, who circles closer with every line of dialogue, and who claims he once murdered his own wife on a carpet just like this one. Lizzani traps his audience inside four walls for 89 minutes and dares them to figure out who's the predator, who's the prey, and whether those categories even apply by the end. The carpet itself becomes evidence, excuse, and eventually crime scene. Single-location Italian giallo stripped to its bones and left to bleed.
