The Hunger

• This was Tony Scott's first theatrical feature. Producer Richard Shepherd hired him after seeing his commercial reel (spots for Hovis bread and Lee Cooper jeans among them), on the recommendation of director Alan Parker, who'd just made Fame for Shepherd.
• The opening nightclub scene, where Bauhaus performs 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' while Miriam and John hunt for prey, was actually shot at the Heaven nightclub in London on March 22, 1982, even though the scene is set in New York. The band performed suspended in a cage, with only singer Peter Murphy clearly visible.
• David Bowie's rapid-aging makeup was designed by Dick Smith, who'd win an Oscar the following year for Amadeus. It took around five hours a day to apply and carried Bowie's character through stages meant to look 50, 65, 75, 90, and 150 years old.
• To get the raspy, dying voice for his rapidly aging character, Bowie reportedly climbed to the top of the George Washington Bridge and screamed through punk songs he knew to wreck his voice.
• The love scene between Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon was explicit enough that the MPAA slapped the film with an X rating, delaying its planned early-1982 release until April 1983 while the scene was re-edited to secure an R.

Miriam isn't a vampire at all—she's a collector, and her 'condition' is really a curse of abundance. The film never shows fangs or supernatural transformation. What it shows is a woman who outlives everything she touches and keeps the corpses in the attic like someone who can't throw away old love letters. The blood drinking is almost incidental to the hoarding.

John's rapid decomposition is psychosomatic. He starts decaying the moment he discovers the locked room with Miriam's previous lovers. The film suggests his aging accelerates because he believes it will—his body collapses under the weight of despair and betrayal, not biological inevitability.

Sarah's final scream isn't horror—it's initiation. The last shot shows her having taken Miriam's place, with new companions of her own. She hasn't escaped; she's inherited. The film frames vampirism as real estate: you don't leave the apartment, you just take over the lease.

Miriam Blaylock, ageless predator draped in silk and malice, collects lovers she can't kill. Her current companion, John, signed up for eternal youth but got the fine print: centuries of aging without death. As John literally crumbles, decomposing in real time while still breathing, he drags himself to Dr. Sarah Roberts, a gerontology researcher studying accelerated decay. Miriam notices Sarah too. What follows is seduction as warfare—Miriam wants a replacement, John wants release, and Sarah's about to learn that some clinical trials never end.
