Some read Will as an unreliable narrator whose grief has weaponized into paranoia. Every red flag — the cult video, Pruitt's confession, the locked door — has an innocent-seeming explanation, at least at first. Under this reading, the film toys with the audience right up until the ending confirms Will was right all along.

The film operates as a study of coercive group dynamics and how cults weaponize trauma. Eden and David aren't just hosting a party; they're running a recruitment and elimination event for the cult 'The Invitation.' The Mexico footage, the group's rehearsed calm, and the drugged wine suggest the entire evening was built to sort which guests could be converted and which had to be silenced.

The film can be read as two grief narratives colliding. Will clings to memory; Eden has chosen ideological erasure through the cult's teachings. The party is Eden's argument made flesh — that letting go is survival. Will's refusal to drink and his obsessive reading of the house's details represent his insistence that grief has to be witnessed, not buried — a conviction the ending proves violently correct.

Will hasn't seen his ex-wife Eden in two years — not since their young son died in the house they used to share. Now she's invited him back for a dinner party at that same house, and something is wrong. Eden's too calm. Her new husband David is too welcoming. The old friends around the table laugh too easily at nothing. Will catches fragments: a video of a cult called The Invitation easing a woman's death down in Mexico, a locked upstairs door, a guest caught making silent screaming faces at herself in a bathroom mirror. Everyone tells Will he's paranoid. Maybe he is. The wine keeps pouring. By the time the red lanterns glow outside, it's far too late to leave.
