The Iron Rose

• Jean Rollin financed The Iron Rose himself and was so convinced going in that it would flop, he struck a deal with producer Impex Films to direct a run of hardcore films for them in exchange for the money to make it.
• The cemetery is real: Cimetière de la Madeleine in Amiens, France. Rollin got the idea for the whole film after he and cinematographer Jean-Jacques Renon got disoriented and briefly lost inside that same cemetery after dark.
• The graveyard scenes were shot overnight, roughly 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. Lead actress Françoise Pascal has said in interviews she was genuinely frightened filming alone in the cemetery at midnight, and that Renon had to keep reassuring her between takes.
• Françoise Pascal, born in Mauritius, turned down a role opposite Kirk Douglas in Scalawag to make this film instead — a bet on a nearly-broke French horror director over a Hollywood picture.
• It bombed hard on release: jeered by an unruly crowd at the 1973 Paris Festival International du Film Fantastique et de Science-Fiction and given poor distribution afterward, making it one of the biggest commercial failures of Rollin's career. It only found its cult audience decades later on home video.

The vanishing cemetery is the girl's own psychic architecture. She's not trapped—she's manifesting the maze, building it stone by stone from her unconscious. The boy is the intruder in someone else's dream, which is why every exit he finds seals behind him. The dead aren't haunting the grounds; she's already one of them and the graveyard is simply catching up.

The entire film is a death-and-rebirth allegory in which the boy represents rationalism's last gasp and the girl represents pre-Christian chthonic surrender. Her final dance isn't madness—it's arrival. Rollin stages her transformation as the logical endpoint of his career-long fixation on women who choose the dark.

The film's brief, wordless clown — glimpsed laying flowers on a grave early on and never seen again — suggests the whole thing is a performance, a ghost story staged for an audience of the dead. The cemetery is a set, the couple are players who forgot their lines, and by the time she locks the tomb door, she's stopped performing and started directing.

A young couple meet at a wedding, then take a bike-ride date straight into an old cemetery on a whim — and stay past dark. An old caretaker locks the gates behind them without either one noticing, and by the time they realize it, they're stuck till morning. The girl spirals first, seduced by the crypts, talking to the headstones like old friends. The boy panics, stumbles into an open grave full of bones, and has to be talked back to calm. At midnight she finds an iron rose growing wild among the graves — and uses it as her excuse to slip away, luring him back into the tomb where they'd made love earlier and locking the door on him from outside. Then she dances alone among the headstones, barefoot, singing, until the sun comes up. Rollin strips away the vampires that made his name, leaving only his real obsession underneath them: women who cross over and never come back. A ghost story with one ghost — and she's the one still breathing.
