PLOT
- Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stefano contributed to the script, most notably the scene where the creature attacks from inside a watermelon.
- Rod Steiger did his own stunt getting doused with a 55-gallon drum of methyl-cellulose "slime," and told young co-director Stephen Carpenter, "an actor is the only person whose mistakes are photographed" — advice Carpenter said changed how he and co-director Jeffrey Obrow directed from then on.
- The film began as a 7-9 minute UCLA short by directors Jeffrey Obrow and Stephen Carpenter with producer Stacy Giachino, made to pitch investors. It worked, landing a $3.5 million budget from F/M Entertainment (the former Feldman/Meeker Company).
- Interiors were shot on a soundstage at Culver Studios, the historic lot behind Gone with the Wind and Citizen Kane.
- Creature Anthony was designed by effects artist Michael McCracken with makeup effects by Matthew Mungle.
- The film grossed just over $2.4 million theatrically against its $3.5 million budget on its January 9, 1987 release, then found its real cult following on VHS.
