PLOT
  • The script began life as a planned third Hammer Dracula picture. When Christopher Lee declined to reprise the Count after 1958's Horror of Dracula, screenwriter Anthony Hinds (credited as John Elder) stripped out every trace of Dracula and built an entirely new vampire dynasty around Dr. Ravna instead.
  • The film was denied a certificate by the British Board of Film Censors on initial submission and had to trim its climactic bat-attack sequence before it was granted an X rating for UK release.
  • Director Don Sharp came from a background in British television and documentary work and had reportedly never seen a horror film before producer Anthony Hinds hired him. Kiss of the Vampire was his first Hammer feature and led to a longer working relationship with the studio.
  • Noel Willman, who plays Dr. Ravna, was primarily known as a stage figure rather than a screen actor — he won a Tony Award in 1962 for directing the original Broadway production of Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons.
  • The masked ball sequence at Castle Ravna is widely cited by critics as a direct visual template for the ballroom scene in Roman Polanski's 1967 vampire spoof The Fearless Vampire Killers.
  • For American television, Universal-International re-edited the film and shot new footage centered on an invented family subplot, retitling it Kiss of Evil to pad the runtime out to fill a two-hour broadcast slot.
