PLOT
  • Roger Watkins shot the film in the winter of 1972 inside an abandoned building called Old Main on the SUNY Oneonta campus in New York, casting local theater students, on a reported $3,000 budget — though he later admitted only about $800 of that actually went into production; the rest fed the amphetamine habit he had throughout the shoot.
  • The original three-hour cut was titled 'The Cuckoo Clocks of Hell' and is now lost. A truncated version hit theaters in 1977 as 'The Fun House,' and it wasn't until a 1979 re-release (starting in Miami) that a distributor renamed it 'Last House on Dead End Street' — a deliberate play on Wes Craven's 'The Last House on the Left.'
  • Every credit on the film is a pseudonym. Watkins directed under the name 'Victor Janos' and played lead character Terry Hawkins as 'Steven Morrison' — he didn't publicly admit to writing, directing, and starring in the film until the year 2000.
  • Despite its reputation as a UK 'video nasty,' the film itself was never actually on the DPP's prosecuted list — the confusion is widely believed to stem from Tobe Hooper's similarly-titled 'The Funhouse' (1981), which got swept up in the panic in its place.
  • The film barely got a U.S. home-video release (a Venezuelan label put out a rare VHS in the late '80s/early '90s) and spent decades circulating as degraded bootleg tapes among collectors before Barrel Entertainment finally issued an official two-disc DVD in 2002.
