The cops who bumble through the film—literally unable to catch the gang, saddled with a car that breaks down and leaves them hitching a ride on a chicken truck—aren't just comic relief. Their uselessness is the thesis: the system can't protect you, and the only justice that arrives is the kind you administer yourself with a chainsaw.

Two teenagers duck out from Mari's own 17th birthday plans for what they think is a city adventure. Instead they wander into the orbit of Krug's gang—escaped cons on the run. What follows is an extended, escalating ordeal in the woods, then a brutal pivot: the gang's getaway car breaks down and, posing as stranded travelers, they knock on the nearest door for shelter. By grim coincidence, it's Mari's own family home. Her parents piece together the truth and deliver revenge with tools from the garage and a fury that makes the killers' cruelty look almost restrained. Craven's thesis: the monster lives next door, and so does the punishment.
