Shooting ran roughly six weeks from late February 1977, with Adelaide doubling for a rain-soaked Sydney.
• Peter Weir insisted every Aboriginal role be played by real Aboriginal community members rather than trained actors: he flew to Groote Eylandt to recruit elder and local magistrate Nandjiwarra Amagula to play Charlie, while David Gulpilil — who'd broken out three years earlier in Nicolas Roeg's Walkabout (1971) — starred as Chris Lee.
• Amagula, serving as the film's cultural advisor, refused to let the production use real sacred Aboriginal iconography, so Weir's art department invented an entirely fictional set of tribal symbols instead. • Richard Chamberlain, then best known as the clean-cut TV heartthrob of Dr. Kildare, was cast against type as unraveling lawyer David Burton — a contrast critics at the time noted directly.
• The film picked up seven AFI Award nominations and actually won Best Achievement in Sound at the 1978 ceremony — not Best Picture, a detail that gets misremembered often.

David Burton is already dead from the beginning. His car accident in the opening stretch is fatal, and the entire investigation plays out in a liminal space between worlds.
