The Lighthouse

• Because no real lighthouse fit the production's needs, the crew built a 70-foot lighthouse from scratch at Cape Forchu in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, fitted with a working reproduction third-order Fresnel lens.
• Director Robert Eggers and his brother/co-writer Max wrote the dialogue directly in archaic dialect rather than translating modern English, drawing heavily on the coastal-Maine vernacular of 19th-century author Sarah Orne Jewett along with Herman Melville's sea writing.
• The film was shot on black-and-white 35mm Kodak Double-X stock using vintage 1930s-40s Baltar lenses and a boxy 1.19:1 aspect ratio, with a custom cyan filter used to mimic 19th-century orthochromatic film.
• The Lighthouse premiered in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and won that year's FIPRESCI International Critics' Prize.
• Robert Pattinson pushed himself into a genuinely grueling physical state for the role, including repeatedly making himself vomit and urinating on himself during scenes, a process documented in on-set interviews and later profiles of the shoot.

Ephraim Winslow is already dead and the island is his purgatory. The repetitive tasks, the cryptic confession about his former foreman's death, and his inability to escape the rock all loop him through punishment cycles. The light is whatever waits on the other side — salvation or oblivion — and he keeps failing to earn it.

Tom Wake is a sea god or folkloric keeper-spirit bound to the lighthouse, and the string of dead apprentices he mentions aren't accidents but sacrifices. The seagull he forbids Winslow from killing functions as a familiar, tying the film's superstition to maritime folklore about souls trapped in seabirds.

The entire experience is a folie à deux triggered by alcohol withdrawal and isolation, with no supernatural element. The mermaid, the hallucinogenic sex scene, and the final climb all map onto documented symptoms of alcohol-induced psychosis and prolonged sensory deprivation.

Two men, one weathered and one green, get deposited on a jagged rock off New England in the 1890s to keep a lighthouse running. Four weeks stretches into something else. The older keeper hoards the light's top floor like a shrine; the younger hauls coal, cleans, and slowly comes apart. Storms pin them. Rations dwindle. Rum flows. The line between cabin fever and something genuinely supernatural dissolves. Sea gulls carry curses. Mermaids stare from memory. A man buries another alive — who claws his way back out swinging an axe — and after a brutal fight climbs toward the light itself. What he finds there costs him everything.
