The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue

• Despite being a Spanish-Italian co-production, the film was shot almost entirely in England — around Manchester, Cheadle, and the Derbyshire Peak District (Dovedale, Winnats Pass, Castleton, Hathersage), which doubles for the Lake District countryside the story is set in.
• It's been released internationally under more than 15 titles, including Let Sleeping Corpses Lie in the UK and Don't Open the Window for its 1975 US drive-in run, where it played double bills with The Last House on the Left.
• Giannetto De Rossi handled the film's gore and makeup effects — five years later he'd create the dirt-caked zombie look for Lucio Fulci's Zombie Flesh Eaters.
• Its graphic violence landed it on the UK's "video nasty" DPP list during the 1980s home-video panic; a version cut by almost two minutes was released in 1985, and it wasn't restored uncut in Britain until 2002.
• It premiered at the Sitges Film Festival on September 30, 1974, where Cristina Galbó won Best Actress and Jorge Grau took the CEC award for Best Director.
• In the English dub, Ray Lovelock's dialogue as George was voiced by John Steiner.

The zombies aren't supernatural—they're the environment's immune response. Grau repeatedly frames the undead as a consequence of humanity's assault on the land, and the machine's ultrasonic pulses read as ecological violation rather than sci-fi accident. The dead rise because the living broke something fundamental.

Inspector McCormick is the real monster long before the zombies reach him. His refusal to consider evidence, his class contempt for George and Edna, and his obsession with maintaining institutional authority make him functionally complicit in every death. The film positions bureaucratic denial as deadlier than the undead.

Katie's drug addiction and the strain it puts on her marriage are deliberately mirrored in the zombies' blank compulsion. Grau stages the addicted and the undead as parallel figures — both driven by hungers they can't control, both consuming without purpose — while Edna gets pulled into the wreckage just by showing up to check on her sister.

A biker antique dealer and a woman on her way to check on her drug-addicted sister collide in the English countryside just as something starts clawing corpses out of the ground. An experimental Ministry of Agriculture machine — pumping ultrasonic radiation into the soil to kill pests — wakes the dead instead, and the local police inspector would rather pin the mounting body count on the two outsiders than admit what's actually walking through the Peak District fog. Grau frames it as environmental catastrophe wearing zombie drag: the earth literally rejecting humanity's interference. It ends on horror's cruelest joke — the cop guns down the innocent man in front of him, and the corpse gets back up to strangle him for it.
