PLOT
- Shochiku β the studio best known for gentle family dramas and (soon after) the long-running Tora-san comedies β put this atmospheric ghost story out in 1968 during a brief run of horror titles; critics have since called it "the peak of Shochiku's dalliance with horror convention."
- Lead actress Kikko Matsuoka plays both halves of the twin storyline β murdered bride Yoriko and her haunted surviving sister Saeko β a dual performance most reviews single out as the film's anchor.
- The Dragon King's ghost-ship appearances were achieved with old-fashioned miniature work β a small-scale model ship shot in a water tank β a technique common to Japanese genre films of the era.
- The screenplay was co-written by Kikuma Shimoiizaka, a prolific Japanese mystery novelist, alongside Kyuzo Kobayashi.
- The film stayed largely obscure outside Japan until Criterion's Eclipse Series 37 DVD box set, "When Horror Came to Shochiku" (2012), paired it with three other Shochiku horror titles and introduced it to English-language audiences.
