The Living Skeleton

The ghost ship isn't haunted by the murdered crew at all—it's the twin sister's own psychic projection, a grief-driven hallucination she's unconsciously manifesting. Every spectral sighting coincides with her emotional proximity to the truth, suggesting the dead aren't visiting her; she's conjuring them.

The village priest isn't a spiritual guide but the pirate captain in hiding, having reinvented himself after the massacre. His religious authority is cover for guilt, and the skeleton attacks target him specifically because the dead recognize a face the living can't see behind the collar.

The film operates as a stealth critique of postwar coastal economics: the fishing vessel's destruction isn't random piracy but an insurance-fraud scheme gone violent, with the skeletons representing the villagers' own complicity in looking the other way when the original crime paid their debts.

Three years after pirates massacre the crew of the freighter Dragon King — gunning down the ship's doctor and his new bride, Yoriko, in the process — the dead woman's identical twin, Saeko, is living in a fog-bound fishing village under the care of a Catholic priest. A dive with her boyfriend turns up a cluster of human skeletons chained to the seafloor, and soon the Dragon King reappears out of the mist, calling her name across the water. Matsuno stages a revenge tale that blurs the line between the living and the corpse-pale, with a village full of secrets — and a priest who isn't what his collar suggests — waiting to settle an old, wet score.
