The Mansion of Madness

• Loosely based on Poe's 1845 short story "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether," the film's central twist has escaped inmate Raoul Fragonard impersonating the real "Dr. Maillard" after leading an asylum uprising — Claudio Brook plays both the impersonator and the man he's replaced.
• Surrealist artist Leonora Carrington, working with her son Gabriel Weisz, supervised the film's sets and costumes, carrying over recurring motifs from her paintings, including a white horse used as her personal alter ego.

Fragonard's theatrical staging of "authentic insanity," hidden behind Dr. Maillard's stolen name, positions the asylum as a metaphor for cinema itself: a controlled space where spectacle and pathology feed each other and the audience becomes complicit.

Gaston's gradual unraveling as he investigates implies he was never fully stable to begin with; his "investigation" could be read as an unreliable account, making the whole film a delusion constructed from within the institution rather than an outsider's honest report.
