• When uncredited bootleg copies started circulating at UFO conventions in the early '90s, they reportedly convinced serious UFO researchers — including nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman and a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel — that the footage was genuine.
• The now-famous title is actually a mix-up: bootleg distributor Axiom Films stripped the credits and swapped in a fake missing-persons plea for 'the McPhersons' — the family on screen is actually named Van Heese.
• Alioto landed a bigger budget, professional actors, and effects help from the X-Files crew for the 1998 UPN remake 'Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County' — it caused enough real viewer confusion on air that the actual Lake County, Montana sheriff's department had to confirm no McPherson family lived there.
• It predates The Blair Witch Project by a full decade and is widely cited by film historians as one of found-footage horror's founding blueprints.
