• The Jangsanbeom is based on a real Korean urban legend from the Busan area — a tiger-like creature said to mimic human voices, especially those of women and children, to lure victims into the mountains.
• The Mimic was writer-director Huh Jung's second feature, following his 2013 directorial debut Hide and Seek, a surprise hit that drew 5.6 million admissions in South Korea.
• Heo Jin plays Soon-ja, the family's senile grandmother — her worsening dementia is part of why the family moves to the mountains in the first place.
• The film crossed one million admissions in South Korea within about ten days of its August 2017 release, becoming the first Korean horror film to hit that mark in four years, since 2013's Killer Toon.

The mimic functions as a projection of the mother's unresolved grief—she cannot let go of her lost child, and the creature exploits that refusal by becoming whatever she needs to hear. Every family member who falls victim does so because the mimic speaks in the specific voice of their deepest regret or desire.

The feral girl is not the creature itself but a previous victim who was partially consumed and psychologically hollowed out, left behind as a kind of lure or scout. Her odd behavior comes from fragmented identity—the mimic took her voice but left her body, trapping her between human and instrument.

The film's structure mirrors the Jangsanbeom itself: what starts as a family drama gradually reveals itself as a creature feature, just as the creature gradually reveals itself by mimicking the shape of something familiar. The audience undergoes the same deception as the characters.
