PLOT
- Balagueró adapted the film from British horror writer Ramsey Campbell's 1981 novel of the same name, shifting the setting from England to Spain while keeping the book's bleak view of inherited, doctrinal evil.
- The film swept Sitges 1999, winning Best Actress (Emma Vilarasau) and Best Cinematography (Xavi Gimenez), then went on to take the Melies d'Or for Best European Fantastic Film and the Melies de Plata for Best Film from the Melies International Festivals Federation.
- It was Balagueró's directorial debut, and its box-office success is credited with helping spark Spain's wave of major studio horror productions through the 2000s.
- The festival breakout led straight into Balagueró's English-language debut, Darkness (2002) — a much bigger-budget (around $11 million) supernatural horror starring Anna Paquin fresh off her X-Men breakout.
- Key interiors were shot around Barcelona, including the historic Hotel del Valles and Tibidabo amusement park, standing in for the story's abandoned-hotel cult lair.
