• Balagueró adapted the film from British horror writer Ramsey Campbell's 1981 novel of the same name, shifting the setting from England to Spain while keeping the book's bleak view of inherited, doctrinal evil.
• The film swept Sitges 1999, winning Best Actress (Emma Vilarasau) and Best Cinematography (Xavi Gimenez), then went on to take the Melies d'Or for Best European Fantastic Film and the Melies de Plata for Best Film from the Melies International Festivals Federation.
• It was Balagueró's directorial debut, and its box-office success is credited with helping spark Spain's wave of major studio horror productions through the 2000s.

The film's final twist — that the cult deliberately engineered Angela's disappearance and reconditioning from the start — reframes the entire narrative as a ritual in which Claudia herself is the sacrifice. Every clue she uncovers was planted; the sect doesn't just tolerate her investigation, they require it as a component of their doctrine of suffering.

The Nameless cult operates as a literalization of Lovecraftian cosmic indifference rather than a conventional Satanist cabal. Their doctrine doesn't worship evil — it worships the void, the absence of meaning. The film's refusal to fully explain their theology is itself the thesis: understanding the group is antithetical to their existence.

Massera's death isn't a twist, it's an inevitability: as the skeptical outsider who gets closest to the truth, his murder (alongside Quiroga's) exists to strip Claudia of every ally before her final, unmediated confrontation with Angela — the cult doesn't recruit the investigation, it simply outlasts it.

The ending doesn't comfort — it implicates.
