PLOT
  • Charles Laughton's only directorial credit. The film's brutal critical and commercial failure on release reportedly convinced him never to direct again.
  • The preacher Harry Powell was inspired by Harry Powers, a real 'lonely hearts killer' hanged in 1932 for murdering widows and children he lured through personal ads in West Virginia.
  • James Agee's original screenplay ran 293 pages, far too long to shoot. Laughton heavily rewrote it himself during production but insisted Agee keep sole screenwriting credit.
  • The film bombed at the box office and received zero Academy Award nominations. Its reputation was rebuilt over decades through critical reassessment; Cahiers du Cinema ranked it the second-greatest film ever made in 2008, behind only Citizen Kane.
  • Laughton's wife, actress Elsa Lanchester, suggested casting silent-film legend Lillian Gish as Rachel Cooper.
  • The children's river escape was shot entirely on a Pathe soundstage using painted backdrops and matte effects for its deliberately artificial, storybook quality -- cinematographer Stanley Cortez said people often asked him what real river it was filmed on.
