John Harper is the real protagonist, not as a boy but as the audience's surrogate witness. The film's POV increasingly aligns with his traumatized, gospel-soaked narration, suggesting that the entire story is John's memory, refracted through a child's understanding of Scripture and the terrifying adult world.
