The Oily Maniac

The sorcerer's spell functions as a Faustian bargain the film never explicitly acknowledges. Each kill costs the protagonist a piece of his humanity, and the story's descent into repetitive, escalating violence suggests the spell was never meant to grant justice — it was designed to produce another monster, another story for the grimoire.

The gangster-shakedown plot positions the law and police as almost irrelevant, arriving only to mop up after the oily maniac does the real work. Read against 1970s Hong Kong's reputation for organized crime and institutional distrust, the film plays as a fantasy of extrajudicial justice where the system's failures literally create the monster cleaning up its mess.

Shaw Brothers goes full-bore weird with this mutant-revenge oddity. Shen Yuan (Danny Lee) is a lawyer left crippled by polio, hopelessly in love with the daughter of a coconut-oil company owner who's being shaken down by local gangsters. When the law can't protect them, Shen Yuan learns of a sorcerer's spell that transforms him into a gooey, oil-slathered monstrosity the moment he's immersed in oil. Near-invulnerable and running on pure grudge, he goes after the mobsters one by one, the plot repeating its shrieking-monster-bursts-in-and-kills-bad-guys beat until the whole thing drowns in crude oil and camp. Equal parts superhero origin story and creature-feature body horror, powered by cut-rate 1970s Hong Kong effects that never once disguise the guy in the rubber suit — and it's more fun for it.
