The Old Dark House

• The film was adapted from J.B. Priestley's 1927 novel "Benighted" by screenwriters R.C. Sherriff and Benn Levy; Universal acquired the rights at James Whale's insistence right after "Frankenstein."
• Boris Karloff was billed above the title for the first time in his career on this film -- a deliberate change after Universal had left him off "Frankenstein" (1931)'s promotional materials entirely, crediting him only at the end.
• The film nearly vanished after Universal let its copyright lapse in the 1950s. Director Curtis Harrington tracked down a surviving print in Universal's vaults in 1968 and pushed for its preservation, eventually helping secure its legal re-release.
• Gloria Stuart, who plays Margaret, went on decades later to earn a SAG Award and an Academy Award nomination playing Old Rose in James Cameron's "Titanic" (1997) -- at 87, the oldest Best Supporting Actress nominee in Oscar history.

The Femm house is a template for the horror genre's fascination with inherited rot: every family member embodies a different failure mode of repression—Horace's cowardice, Rebecca's fanaticism, Saul's pyromania—suggesting the house doesn't generate madness so much as preserve it.

Morgan's drunken violence reads as the film's most honest emotional response. Everyone else performs civility while seething; Morgan simply drops the mask when the gin hits. The film may be arguing that politeness is the real horror.

The travelers' arrival during a storm mirrors the novel's class critique: the house only reveals its truth when outsiders are forced inside and held long enough to see beneath the surface. Whale undermines the rescue fantasy by having the guests leave changed but not healed.

A brutal storm strands five travelers at a Welsh manor occupied by the decaying Femm family and their hulking mute butler, Morgan. The clan's secrets curdle in every shadow: religious fanaticism, sibling resentment, a pyromaniac locked upstairs. As bottles empty and Morgan gets meaner with drink, the house itself seems to reject its guests. Then Saul Femm escapes his room, and the night takes a sharp turn toward genuine madness. Whale's haunted house picture is less about ghosts than the horror of being trapped with monstrous company.
