Simón's death in the hidden basement is not accidental but fate: the orphanage itself functions as a predatory organism that consumes children to sustain its ghostly ecosystem. Every adult who attempts to repurpose it fails because the house requires the sacrifice.

Laura's discovery of Simón's body and subsequent suicide represent the ritual she was instructed to perform — not a tragedy but a deliberate exchange. She becomes the new mother figure for the dead children, replacing the sinister role of the old orphanage caretaker and perpetuating the cycle.

The medium's session, dismissed by Laura's husband as fraudulent, actually reveals nothing because the spirits are not haunting the house — they are the house. The children are projections of the building itself, which explains why they only communicate through games and rules rather than genuine ghostly intent.

Laura returns to the orphanage where she grew up, planning to reopen it as a home for disabled children. Her adopted son Simón — who doesn't know he's HIV-positive or adopted — starts talking about invisible friends, then vanishes without a trace during the opening reception. Months of searching turn up nothing. A medium tells Laura the house is crawling with child spirits, and Laura pieces together the tragedy behind them: Tomás, a disfigured boy and son of a former orphanage caretaker, drowned in a nearby sea cave decades earlier after the other orphans stole the sack mask he wore to hide his damaged face. His mother later poisoned those orphans in revenge and hid their bodies on the grounds. Following the same game the ghost children play with Simón, Laura finally finds a hidden basement beneath the stairs — the same one Simón discovered the night he disappeared — and inside it, her son's body. He'd been trapped there the whole time, killed by a fall down the stairs. Laura, unable to live with it, takes an overdose of pills so she can be with Simón and the orphaned dead again.
