TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • Lon Chaney designed and built the leg-binding apparatus himself — his knees folded into wooden buckets secured with leather straps behind his thighs, hidden under oversized trousers and a padded upper body. Studio doctors urged him not to wear it because it cut off circulation and caused broken blood vessels, but he insisted for authenticity and could only stay in the rig a few minutes at a stretch.
  • This was the first of five films Chaney made with director Wallace Worsley — they'd reunite for Ace of Hearts and the now-lost Voices of the City and A Blind Bargain, then 1923's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
  • The screenplay was adapted from a pulp novel by Gouverneur Morris; portions were shot on location in San Francisco on a budget of roughly $88,868.
  • Chaney's leather stumps, crutches, and costume from the production were later donated to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, alongside his famous makeup case.
  • It was Chaney's first starring role, and it made him a star — three years before he'd play the title role in The Hunchback of Notre Dame and five years before The Phantom of the Opera.
