Alice's death and reanimation by the zombie cult functions as a metaphor for patriarchal medical gaslighting. Every male authority figure, doctor, husband, squire, either dismisses her terror or weaponizes it. Her hysteria isn't the symptom. The men circling her bed are.

The empty coffins aren't just plot mechanics. They're the film's thesis on erasure. The working poor vanish from records, from graveyards, from collective memory, while the men who killed them drink wine in parlours. The zombies are what happens when a community can't even bury its dead without permission from above.

A Cornish village is bleeding population. Bodies pile up, fevers rage, and nobody can explain it — not even the local doctor, Peter Tompson, who sends for his old mentor Sir James Forbes. Forbes digs into the deaths and finds the graveyard suspiciously full of graves and the coffins suspiciously empty. The trail leads to the squire's abandoned tin mine, where something that isn't quite labor anymore is doing the digging. The voodoo-adjacent zombie lore feels imported straight from Caribbean colonial texts, but the real rot is class warfare. An aristocrat who picked up voodoo in the West Indies works men past death itself. Hammer's only zombie picture, and it sinks its teeth into the exact wrong throat.
