The Platform

• Only two tiers of the concrete pit were physically built, on a converted Red Cross facility set in Bilbao. The illusion of a shaft stretching up and down through all 333 levels was created with visual effects, not a suspended rig actors performed on between real floors.
• The film won the People's Choice Award in the Midnight Madness section at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019, plus Best Picture, the Audience Award, and Best Visual Effects at that year's Sitges Film Festival, and the Goya Award for Best Visual Effects in 2020.
• Netflix acquired worldwide streaming rights straight out of its TIFF 2019 premiere and released it globally -- including in Spain -- on March 20, 2020.
• Iván Massagué, who plays Goreng, lost roughly 12 kg (26 lbs) over the six-week shoot; the film was largely shot in chronological order so his physical deterioration would read as real on screen.
• A sequel, The Platform 2 (El Hoyo 2), already released on Netflix on October 4, 2024, with Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia back directing.

The child is not real. The film's final shot lingers on the platform ascending with the girl aboard while Goreng remains below, deliberately ambiguous about whether she physically exists or is the symbolic 'message' the system cannot receive. No one in the Pit has ever seen a child before her, which is part of what makes her presence so uncanny -- one reading is that she's a projection of Goreng's dying consciousness rather than a flesh-and-blood survivor.

The Pit is not a prison but a laboratory for social modeling. The monthly level reassignments aren't punishment, they're data collection. The administration doesn't want order, they want iteration. Trimagasi's admission that 'the administration knows everything' suggests every act of cannibalism and cooperation is being catalogued as behavioral science.

Miharu's descent through the levels on her platform-riding missions isn't just maternal instinct, she's the only character who's figured out the system is watching and is performing resistance for an audience. Her attacks are calibrated to be witnessed, not just to feed her child, who may or may not exist on Level 333.

A concrete pit. 333 levels. One platform of food descends daily, and by the time it reaches the bottom, there's nothing left but bones and desperation. Goreng wakes on Level 48 with a book and a vague idealism, sharing his cell with an old man who's been calculating survival arithmetic for years. The Pit runs on a brutal economy: eat what's above you, or eat who's beside you. Gaztelu-Urrutia's prison-vertical turns class hierarchy into architecture, and every month the gas knocks you out so management can shuffle the deck. The message going back up is a child. Whether anyone receives it is another question entirely.
