The killer is never caught, but the documentary structure invites the reading that the tapes themselves are the real perpetrator, the killer an anonymous delivery system. The film's obsession with recording, re-watching, and cataloging suggests the camera doesn't document evil, it creates it.

Cheryl Dempsey's final interview, where she defends her captor and seems psychologically fused with him, can be read as the film's actual climax, not the tapes. The theory goes that Poughkeepsie isn't about a serial killer at all, it's about what captivity does to the survivor's sense of self, and the documentary crew is complicit in her continued exploitation.

The killer's theatrical staging of bodies and elaborate mask work have led some viewers to argue he's a composite built from real predator case files rather than one fictional murderer, and that the film is less about a single killer than about the entire archive of American serial-killer mythology and our compulsion to study it.
