The Premonition

Andrea isn't really the villain of the piece — she's a mother failed twice over, first by mental illness and then by a system that took her daughter and never gave her a real shot at getting better. Jude killing her before she can be redeemed or defeated turns the 'threat' of the film into its most tragic figure.

Sheri's premonitions aren't presented as a clean gift — the film frames them as something closer to contamination, like proximity to Janie and Andrea's trauma is bleeding into her uninvited rather than arriving as a controlled supernatural ability.

The climax leaves it ambiguous whether Sheri's visions were ever really hers. She draws Janie back by playing Andrea's own piano piece — which reads less like Sheri using a personal gift and more like Andrea, in death, finally reaching her daughter through the one person capable of hearing her.

A foster mother's psychic flashes start pulling her toward a little girl slipping out of her grip. Sheri Bennett begins seeing things she has no business seeing — a carnival, a girl wandering alone, a body going into a lake — right as her adopted daughter Janie's biological mother resurfaces. Andrea Fletcher isn't running some mentalist act; she's a woman fresh out of a psychiatric institution, once a concert pianist, now unraveling and hell-bent on getting her kid back. Her boyfriend Jude — a mute carnival clown who moves like he studied under Marcel Marceau — is the one who actually pulls it off, hiding Janie in his trailer after a car wreck separates her from Sheri. While Jude stashes the girl, Andrea spirals further and winds up dead, stabbed by Jude himself in a fight nobody was around to see. That leaves Sheri, leaning on a parapsychologist and visions she can't explain, sitting down at a piano in the town square at midnight to play the one song that might call a lost little girl home before Jude can get her out of town for good.
