PLOT
  • Tom Savini — fresh off Friday the 13th and Maniac, both 1980 — designed The Prowler's gore effects, including the now-legendary gag where a bayonet is driven straight through a victim's skull.
  • The UK cut (released there as Rosemary's Killer) was trimmed by the BBFC for its 1981 cinema run and landed on the DPP's Section 3 "video nasty" list; those cuts weren't fully waived for an uncut UK release until Optimum's 2007 DVD.
  • Director Joseph Zito shot the film in Cape May, New Jersey, after his intended location — Avalon, California — fell through; the shoot ran six weeks starting in October 1980, and the budget is reported anywhere from $400,000 to $1 million depending on the source.
  • Farley Granger, star of Hitchcock's Rope and Strangers on a Train, plays Sheriff George Fraser.
  • The 1945 prologue uses real black-and-white archival newsreel footage of WWII troops returning home — including shots of the Queen Mary docking in New York — rather than a stylized sepia filter.
  • The Prowler ranked just 135th at the US box office in 1981 but built a lasting cult reputation, later named among the genre's best by outlets like Complex and Paste.
