PLOT
  • Director Philip Ridley shot the film as a UK-Canada co-production backed by BBC Films and Téléfilm Canada; despite the story's 1950s Idaho setting, principal photography actually took place in Crossfield, Alberta, a rural town outside Calgary, in summer 1989.
  • The film didn't win at Cannes but swept Locarno in 1990, taking the C.I.C.A.E. Award, the FIPRESCI Prize, and the Silver Leopard; at that year's Sitges Film Festival, Lindsay Duncan won Best Actress and Dick Pope won Best Cinematography.
  • The Reflecting Skin was produced by Dominic Anciano and Ray Burdis, with cinematography by Dick Pope, whose muted, golden-hour images (inspired by painters like Andrew Wyeth) became the film's visual signature.
  • Miramax gave the film only a limited U.S. theatrical release on June 28, 1991. It built its cult reputation slowly through festival prints and imports — including an out-of-print 2005 Japanese DVD — with no proper U.S. Blu-ray/DVD release until Film Movement's 2019 edition.
  • The Reflecting Skin was one of Viggo Mortensen's earliest film roles and marked the first time one of his films premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
