The Reincarnation

• This is a 42-minute short film, not a feature — the vault draft's claim that it was Greenaway's 'debut feature' is wrong; his actual debut feature was The Falls (1980).

The unseen ornithologist may be less a character than a stand-in for Greenaway's own obsession with cataloguing and mapping. The 'reincarnation' in the title isn't mystical — it's medium-specific: a life gets reborn the moment it's painted, mapped, or filmed.

Because the 92 maps are fictional places with no real-world referent, the film can be read as a quiet warning about trusting confident voiceover generally — including documentary narration itself, which claims authority over territory it's actually inventing as it goes.
