PLOT
  • This is a 42-minute short film, not a feature — the vault draft's claim that it was Greenaway's 'debut feature' is wrong; his actual debut feature was The Falls (1980).
  • It was the first film Peter Greenaway made with British Film Institute Production Board funding, and the working relationship it started led directly to his 1982 breakout feature The Draughtsman's Contract (per BFI Screenonline).
  • The film's images are 92 original paintings created by Greenaway himself, presented as 'maps' that the narrator uses to trace the ornithologist's route to the afterlife — there is no Dutch countryside setting and no on-screen murder investigation.
  • Michael Nyman scored the film. It was one of his earliest collaborations with Greenaway (their working relationship actually began in the mid-1970s on BFI shorts), a partnership that went on to define much of Greenaway's celebrated 1980s feature work.
