The Resurrected

• The film adapts H.P. Lovecraft's novella 'The Case of Charles Dexter Ward' — the same source material Roger Corman used for 1963's 'The Haunted Palace,' though that earlier film was marketed as part of the Vincent Price/Poe cycle. Dan O'Bannon's version was originally titled 'The Ancestor' before the studio took final cut away from him, re-edited it, and released it as 'The Resurrected.'
• O'Bannon's own cut reportedly ran over two hours; producers stripped him of final-edit rights and re-cut the film without him to make it play more like a conventional horror movie, leaving some famously clunky editing in the release version.
• Visual effects supervisor Todd Masters (founder of MASTERSFX) built the film's animatronic monsters, miniatures, and makeup effects — work that won a Fangoria Chainsaw Award that year.
• The film got a brief theatrical release on June 1, 1991, before going direct-to-video via Live Home Video on April 15, 1992.
• John Terry, who plays PI John March, had played Lt. Lockhart in Stanley Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket' four years earlier, in 1987.
• Chris Sarandon, who plays Charles Dexter Ward/Joseph Curwen, is best known to horror fans as the vampire Jerry Dandrige in 'Fright Night' (1985).

March isn't just a hired PI — he's the witness Curwen needs. Every clue that leads him toward Pawtuxet, the farmhouse, and the old diary reads less like a detective piecing things together and more like Curwen wanting to be found: proof of his resurrection staged for an audience, with March cast as the outsider who has to confirm the identity swap before the final act plays out.

The half-grown things pulling themselves out of the wells in Curwen's catacombs aren't just a haunted-basement set piece — they're a literalization of Lovecraft's real theme: knowledge as contamination. Curwen's necromancy doesn't work clean; it fails over and over, and every twitching, malformed thing down there is evidence that raising the dead corrupts everything it touches, Charles included.

Claire knows more than she lets on. Her performance of the helpless, worried wife is a cover — her calm in the final act reads less like shock than like someone watching a plan resolve. Whether she's protecting Charles, protecting herself, or working an angle of her own, the film leaves just enough unanswered about what she knew and when.

Private detective John March gets hired by Claire Ward to dig into why her husband, chemical engineer Charles Dexter Ward, has gone all-in on the buried history of a 250-year-old ancestor named Joseph Curwen — a warlock who cracked the secret of raising the dead from their own ashes. Charles has bought a farmhouse near an old cemetery outside Pawtuxet and turned the catacombs beneath it into a private hatchery, growing half-formed things in stone wells while claiming it's animal research. March digs up a centuries-old diary that lays out Curwen's original necromancy and the flood that once exposed his crimes to the whole town. Corner Charles at the asylum with a suitcase full of human bones, and the truth comes out: this isn't Charles anymore. It's Curwen, resurrected, wearing his own descendant's face — and the bones in that case are what's left of the real Charles, murdered the moment Curwen clawed his way back. Lovecraft by way of a wet basement.
