The Ritual

• Shot almost entirely in Romania's Carpathian Mountains — about six weeks at high elevation roughly four hours north of Bucharest, standing in for Sweden's wilderness — with the cast and crew fighting real rain, snow, and freezing mud the whole shoot.
• Moder's design leans on Norse mythology's Jötnar (giant) clan: in the story she's called a monstrous "bastard offspring" of Loki, blending human and animal features. There's no such named figure in the actual Eddas — director David Bruckner and concept artist Keith Thompson built her from real mythological pieces rather than a documented myth.
• Andy Serkis's production company The Imaginarium (co-founded with Jonathan Cavendish) backed the film, with Serkis on board as executive producer; Cavendish and Richard Holmes were the actual line producers.
• Adapted from Adam Nevill's 2011 novel of the same name, with screenwriter Joe Barton reworking it for the screen — Barton added the opening liquor-store robbery that isn't in the book, sharpening the film's focus on guilt and grief between the friends.
• Premiered at TIFF 2017 in the Midnight Madness program on September 8; Netflix acquired worldwide rights outside the UK in a deal reported at $4.75 million.
• The creature was built two ways: a full-size practical head-and-arm rig (built by Russell FX) for close interaction shots, and a fully digital version for complex action — Bruckner and Thompson wanted to fully show Moder on screen rather than keep her hidden.

Moder's offer to Luke isn't random — Luke is the one who hid while their friend Rob was murdered in the robbery, and froze instead of helping. The forest selects guilt-stricken survivors, not innocent travelers. Moder feeds on trauma the way a predator selects the wounded animal from the herd.

The cult has been running this cycle for a long time: lure a group, isolate the weakest psychologically, offer worship, kill the rest. Luke walks out of the forest alive but wrecked — battered, silent, staring back at the treeline — and the film leaves it open whether that's peace or just the next stage of the grief he's been running from since Rob died.

The forest itself may be Moder's body, not merely her domain. The strange architecture of the cult's shrine, the impossible spacing of the trees, and the way the group keeps looping back to the same clearing all suggest they've been walking inside something alive since they left the trail.

Four blokes hike deep into Sweden's wilderness to honor a dead mate, and the forest chews them up slow. Luke carries guilt nobody will let him forget — he's the one who hid instead of helping when their friend Rob was murdered during a liquor-store robbery back home. The others carry resentment they won't stop weaponizing. Ancient Norse paganism waits in the trees, and a grotesque deity named Moder offers a deal none of them understand until it's far too late. Bruckner trades found-footage shake for classical framing, and the forest earns every inch of dread. Worship or die. Some choices are worse than that.
