PLOT
- Director Roger Christian won the Oscar for Best Art Direction–Set Decoration on the original Star Wars (1977) and served as art director on Alien (1979), earning a second Oscar nomination there, before The Sender became his feature directorial debut.
- The Sender was a transatlantic shoot: interiors (the psych ward, operating room) were built and filmed at Shepperton Studios in England, while exteriors—including a truck chase through Underground Atlanta—were shot on location in Georgia.
- Kathryn Harrold (fresh off The Hunter with Steve McQueen) plays Dr. Gail Farmer, and Zeljko Ivanek makes his film debut as the telepathic John Doe #83.
- Screenwriter Thomas Baum drew on his own childhood with an agoraphobic, overprotective mother for the story; the script bounced from 20th Century Fox (chasing a follow-up to The Fury) to Paramount before the film finally got made.
- The Sender flopped in its limited 1982 US release, earning just over $1 million, but it's since become a genuine cult pick—Quentin Tarantino has called it his favorite horror film of 1982, and it opened the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival with director George Miller championing it.
