The Skull

• Amicus Productions, not Hammer, produced The Skull — part of Amicus's push into full-length color horror to compete directly with Hammer's gothic output.
• Director Freddie Francis had already made his name directing horror for Hammer (Paranoiac, Nightmare) and one prior Amicus picture before The Skull; he shot it at Shepperton Studios, largely on one composite set of five rooms and a corridor.
• The film is based on Robert Bloch's short story 'The Skull of the Marquis de Sade,' but the screenplay itself was credited to Milton Subotsky — and Francis rewrote much of it once filming was underway.
• The floating-skull possession sequences were achieved with suspension wires, kept well-hidden throughout except for one climactic close-up where they briefly show.
• Christopher Lee received 'guest star' billing and has noticeably less screen time than the marketing (leaning on his and Cushing's Hammer-era pairing) implies, though the two share a few scenes together, including a billiards-room exchange about the skull's history.

The skull's power may be entirely psychological — Maitland's obsession with the Marquis de Sade mirrors de Sade's own fixation on transgression, suggesting the possession is a self-fulfilling descent rather than supernatural invasion. The film offers no objective proof the skull acts independently.

Sir Matthew's warning carries hidden motive: he previously owned the skull and survived its influence, but his frantic insistence that Maitland destroy it reads as a man desperate to eliminate evidence of his own past corruption rather than genuine concern.

The ending — Maitland found with his throat torn out exactly like Marco's — suggests the skull isn't looking for a permanent host at all. It's a serial killer that uses a collector up, kills him the same way every time, and waits for the next one arrogant enough to think he can control it.

Dr. Christopher Maitland, a collector of the macabre, is offered the skull of the Marquis de Sade by Anthony Marco, an unscrupulous antiques dealer — then finds Marco dead under mysterious circumstances and takes the skull for himself. The thing has a nasty habit of disappearing from its glass case at night and floating toward Maitland's sleeping head. Freddie Francis splits the audience's allegiance early — Peter Cushing's Maitland wants to study it, Christopher Lee's Sir Matthew Phillips warns him to destroy it, having escaped the skull's grip once himself — then spends a nearly dialogue-free final act watching the object grind Maitland down. Come morning, his wife finds him with his throat torn out, exactly like Marco before him — proof the Marquis is far from finished.
