TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • Screenwriter William Goldman and director Bryan Forbes clashed hard over casting. Goldman had written the replacement wives as glamorous, model-like women in skimpy outfits — but Forbes cast his own wife, actress Nanette Newman, as one of them. Goldman felt her casting undermined the logic of the story and documented the resulting rift in his book 'Adventures in the Screen Trade.' Forbes ended up rewriting all of Goldman's script except the final twenty minutes.
  • The Men's Association headquarters was filmed at a real location: the historic Lockwood-Mathews Mansion in Norwalk, Connecticut, which still operates today as a museum.
  • Joanna Cassidy originally played Joanna's friend Bobbie but was fired two weeks into production and replaced by Paula Prentiss — the role became one of Prentiss's most memorable film performances.
  • The film grossed roughly $4 million at the U.S. box office and got a mixed, even hostile, reception from some feminists on release — Betty Friedan publicly dismissed it as a 'rip-off of the women's movement.' It only grew into a feminist-horror cult classic over the following decades.
  • Ira Levin based the fictional town of Stepford on Wilton, Connecticut, where he actually lived during the 1960s.
  • The film's grocery-store ending was shot at a real Grand Union supermarket at the Goodwives Shopping Center in Darien, Connecticut.
