The Strange World of Coffin Joe

Hard not to read Oãxiac Odéz's cage as Marins' own.

Keeping Coffin Joe mostly off-screen might be the actual argument of the film: the character was never the monster. The real monsters are ordinary men without a cape — a dollmaker, a balloon vendor, a professor — which is scarier than any devil in a top hat.

The swapped ending — a mismatched explosion lifted from an unrelated Omar Sharif melodrama — was forced on Marins by censors, but some fans read the seam itself as an extra layer of dread: the film glitching under its own censorship, unable to end the story it actually told.

Forget documentary crews and confession-booth theatrics — this is Mojica Marins locking three separate nightmares in one theater and standing at the door as the host. Zé do Caixão barely lifts his cape here, popping in just long enough to grin you into the next segment, while the real horror plays out without him. First: a São Paulo dollmaker whose four daughters lure men to their deaths so he can carve their eyes into his porcelain creations. Second: a near-silent balloon vendor whose obsession with a woman doesn't end at her funeral — he breaks into her crypt to finish what he started. Third, and the one that got the film banned outright: a professor named Oãxiac Odéz (that's "Zé do Caixão" spelled backward) who cages a rival colleague and his wife, starving and torturing them to prove instinct beats reason. Brazil's military censors shut the whole picture down on completion in 1968. The only way it ever reached a screen was a borrowed explosion, lifted wholesale from an old Omar Sharif melodrama, spliced in to fake a new ending the censors would accept. Three stories, one host, zero mercy.
