The Stuff

• Larry Cohen shot the film on a lean budget reported at $3-4 million, filming in New York (including New Paltz) in August 1984 before wrapping with two additional weeks in Los Angeles that September.
• The Stuff itself was built out of everyday materials mixed to match the shot: yogurt, whipped cream, and shaving cream for close-ups, mashed potato flakes and polyurethane for texture, and honest-to-god firefighting foam for the big room-flooding gags.
• Danny Aiello plays Mr. Vickers, one of the ice-cream-industry executives who hires Mo to investigate the product — not the militia colonel some plot summaries mix him up with.

The Stuff functions as a direct allegory for crack cocaine: a cheap, highly addictive substance marketed aggressively to communities that the establishment is happy to let consume themselves. The scene where Mo discovers entire towns quietly addicted mirrors the way epidemics get normalized before anyone in power bothers to look.

The film reads corporate deregulation as body horror. The Stuff isn't a monster that invades—it's a product that was tested, focus-grouped, and given a logo. When the advertising executive Nicole helps dismantle the campaign from inside, the film argues that the people who sold it are the only ones who understand how to un-sell it.

Colonel Spears and his militia represent the logical endpoint of American paranoia: the only resistance to corporate poisoning comes from armed extremists who are themselves poisoned by ideology. The film's refusal to make Spears a clean hero suggests the system leaves no uncorrupted saviors.

A white goo erupts from the earth and somebody decides to eat it. They call it The Stuff, package it like dessert whip, and America cleans the shelves. Former FBI agent David 'Mo' Rutherford takes a contract from displaced dairy executives to find out what's inside the product. He hooks up with an advertising executive who designed the campaign and a kid who caught his father eating from the garbage. The Stuff is alive, addictive, and hollowing people out from within. The revolution gets broadcast from a studio kitchen. Capitalism found something under the ground and put a label on it.
