The Unseen

• Writer-director Danny Steinmann was so unhappy with the studio-mandated final cut — which he felt gutted the film's scares — that he took his name off it, crediting the direction to the pseudonym "Peter Foleg."
• The creature work has a pedigree: the story is credited in part to effects legend Stan Winston, with Stephen Furst's ghastly "Junior" look designed by makeup artists Tom Burman and Craig Reardon.
• It was shot on location in Solvang and Altadena, California between September 1979 and January 1980, but distributor World Northal didn't get it into U.S. theaters until June 1981 (Tucson) and October 1981 (Los Angeles).
• Barbara Bach headlined the cast a few years removed from playing Bond girl Anya Amasova in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) — one of several low-budget genre roles she took before Caveman (1981) and her marriage to Ringo Starr pulled her out of acting.
• Steinmann didn't vanish after this one — he went on to direct the teen-revenge thriller Savage Streets (1984) before landing Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985).

The film operates as a twisted family allegory where the Victorian farmhouse is the American nuclear family itself — respectable on the exterior, concealing inherited violence in the basement. Ernest's civic standing isn't a contrast to his son's monstrosity; it's the machinery that produces it.

The three women's journalistic purpose mirrors the audience's own gaze. They arrive to document and observe, and the film punishes that gaze by trapping them inside the very spectacle they came to consume. The camera turns predatory.

Junior can be read as the literal manifestation of repressed pathology kept out of sight — chained, fed scraps, denied existence. The film suggests that what polite society locks away doesn't stay locked.

Three women reporters arrive in the small California town of Solvang to cover its annual Danish festival and end up stranded when their hotel reservation falls through. Eccentric museum curator Ernest Keller offers them a room in the rambling farmhouse he shares with his reclusive sister Virginia — a home built on a secret the two of them have kept for over twenty years. What's locked in the basement isn't just family shame kept quiet; it's "Junior," a feral, deformed son born of the Kellers' own incestuous relationship and kept starved and half-mad in the dark. The bodies start hitting the floor before the guests realize their hosts' hospitality is a trap.
