• Amat Escalante won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival for The Untamed — he shared the prize that year with Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky (Paradise).
• The tentacled creature was built as a real, physical puppet on set. The VFX team's stated philosophy was to make it as tangible and practical as possible first, then reinforce it with digital work — not build it from CGI outward.
• The film received Mexican production funding through FOPROCINE (an IMCINE fund), but the irony cut the other way after Venice: Escalante couldn't secure IMCINE's separate EFICINE distribution stimulus, and the film didn't reach Mexican theaters until February 2018 — after it had already played in dozens of other countries.

The creature functions as a literal manifestation of repressed desire—every character who seeks it out is running from something they cannot openly express in their conservative social context. Its lethal nature suggests that repression doesn't just hide desire; it weaponizes it.

Verónica's relationship with the entity mirrors an abusive dynamic: she keeps returning to something that hurts her, recruits others into its orbit, and rationalizes the damage. The creature becomes a metaphor for cyclical trauma that passes through generations and relationships like a contagion.

The film's refusal to moralize about who survives and who doesn't reads as a rejection of horror's traditional puritanical code. The creature doesn't punish sin—it simply exists beyond human ethics, making the real horror the human systems that drive people toward it in the first place.

Alejandra's marriage to Angel is rotting from the inside—he's cheating with her brother Fabian, and everyone in this Mexican household is suffocating on secrets they can't name. Then Verónica shows up, hooked on secret visits to a barn out in the country where something inhuman is waiting. Something that gives impossible pleasure. Something that also tears people apart. Escalante wedges H.P. Lovecraftian cosmic horror into a domestic drama so dry you almost forget the tentacles until they're wrapped around someone's spine. The creature doesn't care about human categories—gay, straight, abused, abuser. It just takes what it wants and leaves what's left.
