The Vampire Doll

• The Vampire Doll was the first of Toho's "Bloodthirsty Trilogy," followed by Lake of Dracula (1971) and Evil of Dracula (1974) — all three directed by Michio Yamamoto and co-written by Ei Ogawa, though the films share no continuing characters or storylines.
• Critics and retrospectives (Kim Newman among them) frame the trilogy as Toho's answer to Hammer's Gothic horror revival, importing European vampire iconography — coffins, fog, crumbling estates — into a Japanese setting rather than adapting the Dracula legend directly.
• Cinematographer Kazutami Hara built the film's gothic-shadow, fog-shrouded look on Toho's interior sets; he later shot Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (1990).
• Director Michio Yamamoto broke in at Toho as an assistant director to Akira Kurosawa on Throne of Blood (1957), then worked under Kihachi Okamoto on samurai and action pictures before moving into 1960s TV dramas and eventually the Bloodthirsty Trilogy — he was never an AD under Ishiro Honda.
• American distributors retitled the film "Legacy of Dracula" and "The Night of the Vampire" for its 1971 U.S. release, misleadingly branding it a Dracula movie even though the character never appears.

Yuko never actually died — she was resurrected by a post-hypnotic suggestion implanted by Dr. Yamaguchi and kept hidden by a mother who chose a monstrous daughter over no daughter at all. The household operates as a collaboration between maternal grief and predatory hunger, making the mother as much the villain as Yuko herself.

The film reads as a critique of postwar Japanese family obligation: everyone in the house knows what Yuko is, and their silence lets her keep killing. She survives not through supernatural power alone but through the social contract of not speaking about what's wrong.

Keiko — the missing man's sister, not Yuko's — functions as an outsider mirror to Yuko: a woman moving forward with love and loyalty intact, everything violently denied to Yuko by Dr. Yamaguchi's crimes against her family. Her refusal to accept the mother's story is what finally cracks the house's silence open.

A young man returns from a long trip abroad to find his fiancée dead — killed, her mother says, by a landslide days before he arrived. When he vanishes without a trace, his own sister and her fiancé drive out to the family's isolated country house to find him, and stumble into a household drenched in Gothic dread: coffins in the basement, fog-choked woods, a woman who won't stay buried. Yamamoto's first vampire film for Toho grafts Hammer-style European atmosphere onto Japanese domestic secrecy — something in this house is still feeding, kept moving by a hypnotic will planted years before and the family's polite refusal to speak of what's wrong.
