PLOT
- The BBFC forced cuts to the UK cinema version — including the opening decapitation and shots of Carmilla kissing Emma's breasts — before granting the X certificate, and that trimmed print remained the only home-video version until 2002.
- Peter Cushing stars in The Vampire Lovers as General Spielsdorf, but he had to bow out of the next entry in Hammer's Karnstein Trilogy, Lust for a Vampire, after his wife Helen's health declined; Ralph Bates stepped into the role for that sequel instead.
- The story is drawn from Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 novella 'Carmilla,' one of the earliest and most influential vampire tales, predating Dracula by 25 years.
- Director Roy Ward Baker later said he had to push back against producers who wanted a 'soft-core' level of nudity and lesbianism, fighting to keep some of Le Fanu's original subtlety intact.
- The film received an R rating from the MPAA in the US, part of a broader shift as Hammer leaned into more explicit content once Britain's X-certificate age limit rose to 18 in 1970.
